Struggling to regain some semblance of normalcy in their lives, the couple decides to adopt another child. At the local orphanage, both John and Kate find themselves strangely drawn to a young girl named Esther. Almost as soon as they welcome Esther into their home, however, an alarming series of events begins to unfold, leading Kate to believe that there’s something wrong with Esther–this seemingly angelic little girl is not what she appears to be. Concerned for the safety of her family, Kate tries to get John and others to see past Esther’s sweet facade. But her warnings go unheeded until it may be too late…for everyone.

The first 15 minutes of Orphan were unpromising, with its pop out scares and dream sequences. However, I kept my eyes open and grew to see that Orphan is a fascinating sociological document and a superior, intelligent entertainment.

Since you probably have not seen Orphan, here is the plot summary. Kate Coleman (Vera Famiga) is a mother of two with a troubled past. Her career as a pianist and teacher is derailed, she had drinking problems, and she may have been the cause of her surviving daughter’s deafness (either the movie or me is not clear about this). She also has a son, but a third child died at or before birth. Kate and her architect husband John (Peter Sarsgaard), in the wake of all this domestic tragedy, decide to adopt. A visit to an orphanage results in the couple welcoming home Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), an Eastern European 13-year-old of preternatural talent and maturity. The son takes an instant dislike to the girl; but she forms an alliance with her deaf sister; meanwhile at school, Esther’s mean girl enemies start having accidents. Though the whole thing was Kate’s idea, she begins to have doubts about Esther and the adoption, especially since Esther has a knack for twisting the knife in the vulnerable woman’s psyche. John is unable to see what Kate is talking about, and Kate’s shrink takes Esther’s side. At a certain point in the plot, the viewer is let in on the truth of Kate’s worries, and the rest of the film is a race to see who will prevail, Kate and her maternal instinct, or the unnaturally observant and seductive Esther.

This is pulp material and largely preposterous, but within those limitations, if such they be, Orphan (credited to writers Alex Mace and David Leslie Johnson, and directed by House of Wax auteur Jaume Collet-Serra ) is a rather fascinating scrutinizing of real concerns that people have. The critics could not see this. For one thing, they viewed it as a horror film, when in fact, though it has the trappings of a thriller, in reality it is more of an old fashioned “women’s picture” a weepy about a put upon mother. The film is wholly behind the attitudes and experiences of Kate. It takes her side. It views the world from her perspective, so much so that we find ourselves as mad at John for not seeing the obvious as Kate is. The opening sequence of the film is a meditation on the horrors of childbirth; not everyone has such fears of this beautiful, biological act, but enough people do to that, they will be particularly freaked out by certain medical moments in those first few minutes.
Moreover, we all know how hyper-protective and micro managing today’s upwardly mobile parents are. Orphan preys on a fear that families have of the tether (whatever that other may be) invading the home and taking it over, casting out the mother and seducing the father. I do not know how real such fears are, but any social class that obsessed with the minutia of their children’s day-to-day lives must have a bunch of irrational – and maybe even rational – worries. Orphan also utilizes whatever worries westerners might have about Russia. Though perhaps it is not been publicized as being as scary as its old incarnation, the Soviet Union, that isn’t for want of trying by some governments. Russia seems now to be richly competent in oil barony, corrupt politicians, gangsters – and now bad seeds.

When high-powered book editor Margaret (SANDRA BULLOCK) faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she is actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew (RYAN REYNOLDS), who she’s tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family (MARY STEENBURGEN, CRAIG T. NELSON, BETTY WHITE) and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.

Starring : Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Malin Akerman

Director : Anne Fletcher
Studio : Touchstone Pictures

Plaza Senayan XXI-Jakarta,

It is a decent proposition on paper – a high concept romance comey with Sandra Bullock’s mega bitch boss bullying her submissive assistant Ryan Reynolds into a marriage of convenience. Yet it’s hard not to feel rather jilted throughout the formulaic first half, which is dragged down by some serious miscasting and predictable plotting. The movie only develops the confidence to stride purposefully down the aisle once the lead characters emerge from their defensive workplace shells, allowing Bullock and Reynolds to show off their joint appeal. A crowd-pleasing finale and a couple of amusing supporting performances also go a long way to atoning for the movie’s teething problems.

The main problem lies in the difficulty of buying Bullock as Margaret Tate – the pushy, hard-nosed boss from hell. Her employees trade instant messages warning of ‘the witch’s arrival and tremble in her presence, painting her out to be like Meryl Streep’s monstrous Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. But the actress simply exudes too much likeability despite her constant stern expression and is given little scope to show the character’s devilish qualities. The movie needs to show us, not tell us, what Margaret is like.

Similarly, not enough time spent developing the dynamic and power relations between Margaret and her underling Andrew (Reynolds). The narrative feels terribly rushed, with the desperation to hurry reach the plot’s main selling point. This lies in Margaret finding out that she will lose her treasured job as a book editor and be deported to Canada unless she acquires US citizenship, which she opts to do by ordering Andrew to marry her. Canny immigration official Mr Gilbertson (the highly watchable Denis O’Hare ) scents blood, bolstered by an anonymous tip off, and seeks to expose the impending marriage as a lie and thus kick Margaret out of the country.

In order to prepare for a crucial examination about their relationship by Gilbertson, the faux couple decides to visit Andrew’s family in remote Alaska as part of the sham. This jaunt kick starts the hilarity, as Margaret begins to emerge from her hard shell and display her soft, compassionate centre under the scrutiny of Andrew’s dad (Craig T. Nelson), mother (Mary Steenburgen) and grandma (former Golden Girl Betty White). This allows Bullock to display the attributes that first propelled her to stardom – vulnerability, quirky humour, a disarming nature and an aptitude for slapstick. Two standout scenes, one involving a random eagle attack on Margaret’s cell phone and the other involving an unexpected naked entanglement with Andrew, both demonstrate her superb comic timing.

Ryan Reynolds, tipped for mega stardom by many, does little more than put on a bewildered expression that’s eerily reminiscent of George ‘Dubya’ Bush for much of the movie, but he too comes into his own when the action relocates to Alaska. Increasingly assertive towards Margaret, it’s fun and interesting to watch as Andrew gradually strips down his boss (psychologically speaking) and turns the tables on her. It doesn’t take a genius to work out the likelihood of the pair genuinely hitting it off, which we want them to, but the advent of Andrew’s childhood sweetheart and a suspected heart attack within the family ensure that the outcome is uncertain. Fans of the superb American version of The Office will also lap up recurring appearances by Oscar Nunez as the ubiquitous Ramone – vicar by day, stripper by night.

The Proposal is not a marriage made in heaven by any means, but the eventual charm of the leads and a gag-packed second half manage to salvage the movie from inauspicious beginnings. Only the most misanthropic of cinemagoers won’t be left smiling by the time the end credits roll.

Joe” have Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), who is comic relief, black stuff, and can’t control his high-tech armored suit, so he runs into things.

The two teams also each have a skilled Ninja fighter from Japan. I guess the reason they put this because Japan is a huge market for CGI animation and videogames.

There’s a bunch of flashbacks connecting all these people together, but it’s really all about them punching, kicking, cutting, shooting and eventually killing each other.

Overall, the actors and the dialog or poor. For example role play by Sienna Miller as Baroness. They’ve given Miller the most important “dramatic” role of the film. She’s supposed to be a seductress, but it doesn’t seem to possess the range to make us believe she has the power to manipulate men. The sound effects are good, especially the air/laser gun owned by the Baroness, but nothing music-wise is memorable. How do they not try to update the theme song from the cartoon? such a huge mistake for not taking that chance. But all the lack is forgivable because i’m so busy to admire the sights. On my opinion this is the best special effects of this year so far. The underwater battle was something straight out of other adventure fantasy movies.

“G.I. Joe” at least better than “Wolverine”, “Transformers 2″ or even ‘Star Wars’, even though sometimes we have to put our self as 10 years old kid. In other words, knowing or thinking really will take away enjoyment from this film. But at the same time this is my favorite movie of this year so far. Yo Joe !

The wait is over.

Harry Potter and the gang return for the sixth installment of the highly popular Harry Potter series based on the books by J.K. Rowling. This time the story tackles two main plot points : Harry and his friends dealing with their raging hormones and Potter’s attempt at discovering Lord Voldemort’s weaknesses (hocrux). In the meantime, there is plenty of visual wonder to keep the audience barely involved in a pretty boring story.

But unfortunately, the movie confirms what many have felt all along. This is a series of fun adaptations of the wildly successful books without a remarkable movie in the bunch.

That’s not to say that the teen angst-ridden current film is devoid of some special moments. There are plenty of neat little surprises, and the screenplay might be the funniest and best written yet. A guest appearance by Jim Broadbent playing Professor Horace Slughorn nearly steals the show.

But for a film two and a half hours in length there are ghastly long stretches with little or no action filled with inconsequential dialogue certain to cause drowsiness in little ones and impatience in those who hope for the thrills the trailer portends.

Two of the only action sequences are indeed terrific-the Death Eater’s attack on the Weasley homestead and a creepy cave excursion, but they seem to last only an instant. Even the excitement of the Quidditch matches feel more nostalgic than an improvement over those sequences in previous films.

Harry, (Daniel Radcliffe), and best friends Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) are about to begin their sixth year at the Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardy. All three have matured nicely into their roles and their acting seems more fluid and natural. Arch nemesis Voldemort still lurks, while fellow student and pasty-skinned rival Draco (Tom Felton) still seeks revenge.

Headmaster Dumbledore (Michael Gambon in his most likable portrayal thus far) hopes to help Harry find the key to evil Voldemort’s vulnerability, recruiting his old friend Slughorn. Alan Rickman shines again as Professor Snape who appears to be double crossing or is he?

But the heart of this story is to be found in the romantic intentions and anxiety of its hormonal Hogwartian students. Yes love is in the gloomy Scottish air and the castle is teaming with adolescent angst. It’s fun to watch the young wizards work through their awkward emotions.

To be honest, this film is a huge disappointment and leads away from the feeling of the book in a huge way. Too much focus on teenage love lives instead of the real story line which is should be darker. And worst of all, the ending was very disappointing. They dont even had portion for Dumbledore funeral, as we known that he’s one of main role at this story. Where was Harry’s anger and despair as written on the book ? He didn’t appear that stressed which seemed bizarre, especially as he had witnessed the death of his mentor.

The final chapter of the Potter series, titled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, has been split into two films and will finally be released on November 19, 2010 and July 15, 2011. Only then will the films finally give audiences the highly anticipated conclusion that they have been waiting for.
